| MANAGING YOUR PROJECT PORTFOLIO TO DELIVER ON THE STRATEGIC VISION | back |
| 12 June 2003 | |
The heady days of unlimited budgets and resources for new corporate projects are long gone. Instead, businesses have returned to a more traditional focus on ensuring a real return on investment for their organisations. However, despite the more sober mindset, there is a recognition that the pace of change in business has accelerated, impacting the way projects are approved and managed. Establishing a portfolio management approach to projects has the potential to generate a 30-40% improvement in business value. The benefits of project portfolio management include securing the best use of available capital together with ensuring a balanced portfolio of projects aligned with the strategic intent of the organisation. As ever, reading portfolio management related textbooks and articles helps management build an understanding of its importance, but not to actually implement this approach in their own organisations. Knexus is bringing together a cross-industry group of senior management from its membership to share knowledge around this issue and connect-up likeminded corporate professionals. Specifically, the Elevator will assess what processes and techniques are required to successfully undertake portfolio management and how you overcome the organisational barriers. The Elevator will commence with a short case study from Standard Chartered (Knexus members), who will explain the approaches they have introduced across the organisation to help prioritise activity – and demonstrate the tools and methods they have used to visualise and analyse their overall project portfolio. Thereafter, there will be an open, round table discussion. If you have a senior management role in Strategy or Finance, or are in a corporate project/programme office, please join us for what is sure to be a highly stimulating discussion. |
