Work Smarter, Not Harder!
In response to the recent publication of the McKinsey Report,
we are not surprised to hear that the UK has a low productivity
rate despite people working the longest hours. A curious and
potentially worrying result of the technological revolution
in business has been a trend towards working ever harder,
but sadly not necessarily smarter. Some people are so focused
on the immediate requirements of their jobs that they are
filtering out non-core activities that can actually deliver
greater innovation and competitive advantage for their companies.
However, there are also an increasing number of enlightened
business executives that are engaged in Business Communities
and Networks which provide them with rapid access to knowledge,
ideas and best practice from peer group companies. These people
recognise that they can avoid mistakes and accelerate their
business activities by leveraging the knowledge of other business
professionals, using their own experience to trade knowledge.
While the emergence of the Internet means that we’re
all connected and networked through technology today, the
important networks for business executives are those that
connect them to the right people and knowledge. Choosing the
right Community or network to participate in should be a high
priority for all ambitious business executives.
This message was reinforced recently when we held a collaborative
session on Strategic Enterprise Communities with British American
Tobacco, where it was agreed that these types of Communities
will fundamentally change the way an organisation is structured
and affect the working behaviour of every individual. In fact,
there was real enthusiasm in the room, as the participants
were excited at the thought of being involved with such innovation.
